Everyone’s favorite little bird is back in action with the kick off of the World Cup!

Twitter has a history of taking special occasions — the NBA Playoffs, Thanksgiving, the release of a new iPhone, etc. — and spinning them in a way that increases the site’s user base, acts as a media platform for thousands of brands, and engages existing tweeters.

So in good Twitter fashion, the site rolled out a new campaign on Thursday, which seeks to bring nations together under a 2014 World Cup platform. This new feature is available at the top of a user’s feed as soon as they log in to their Twitter account. Taking them step by step through a set-up process, within seconds someone can be connected to a personalized social network dedicated solely to soccer and all of the sport’s Cup glory.

But really, who isn’t excited about the World Cup? Bringing out fans from every country on the planet, all walks of life, and as diverse of backgrounds as one can imagine, the World Cup is truly the center of the universe for the duration of its short-lived life… Not to mention the four years that follow the Cup’s infamous final whistle, which are always full of celebration regardless of which team wins.

The geniuses behind Twitter decided to feed the futbol fire with their new campaign. Drawing on users’ desire to connect with like-minded fans, they created a feature within their campaign that allows users to not only create a profile completely dedicated to their favorite country…

sidesbut they went even further, allowing users to tailor their feeds to include anyone that they currently follow, along with coaches, players, fans, brands, etc. that have anything to do with the team of their choice.

Then, because we can’t be selfish, Twitter encourages users to “invite” their friends to experience the World Cup through a Twitter lens via email or Facebook. As a final touch, the site crafts a tweet for you with a link to the campaign, as well as a hashtag and slogan, “#WorldCup Who are you supporting?


Twitter’s also bringing back the popular ‘hashflags‘ feature to brighten up users’ tweets.  As Twitter’s blog post says, use a hashtag in front of the relevant three-letter country code, and that country’s flag will appear after the text.

Twitter has been counting hashflag usage leading up to yesterday’s game and debuted ‘The World Cup of Tweets’ bracket once Brazil and Croatia got underway.

We are clearly very excited about the World Cup (we’ll be out watching Monday night’s USA-Ghana match at ‘North Carolina’s Best Watch Party‘ at WakeMed Soccer Park– and you should, too!).  It’s always inspiring to see people come together in support of something, and we tend to get goosebumps when social media sites like Twitter, that have users dwelling in every nook and cranny on Earth, utilize their recourses to encourage this bond.
