We’re back with this week’s Winner of the Weekend!

FX’s Louie and its star Louis C.K. brought home the most hardware from Comedy Central’s 2nd Annual Comedy Awards with four awards.  C.K.’s honors last night coupled with last week’s Webby Award for online distribution of his comedy special have admittedly positioned him well for Intrepid’s Winner of the Weekend title.  Yet, in somewhat of a twist, we are choosing to acknowledge the 2nd Annual Comedy Awards on Comedy Central for their use of social media to turn the fledgling award show into a trending topic.

This year, the Comedy Awards included six of the viewers’ choice awards specifically concerned new media platforms – five more than last year.  Five of the viewers’ choice categories could be voted on via the shows’ website, making the experience inherently interactive.  Voting for “Best Viral Original” was done exclusively through The 2012 Comedy Awards’ YouTube Channel.  Comedian Rob Delany deservingly won “Funniest Person on Twitter” and Songify This: Winning- a Song by Charlie Sheen with almost 43 million views won “Best Viral Original.”

The stars of the show got involved on social media as well.  Jessica Williams, the newest Daily Show correspondent, discussed how social media helped her establish a presence.  Parks and Recreation’s Jim O’Heir talked Twitter and one-on-one conversations with fans.  The rest of the Parks and Recreation’s cast even bickered over Twitter in an after show interview.

To promote the show, Comedy Central used the YouTube Masthead and invested in a Twitter Trending Topic.  These placements are both effective in reaching a target audience and well situated on sites that beg for user dialogue and interaction.  Social media was also exclusively used to announce the nominations as well as the attending talent and presenters.

The Comedy Awards won the weekend because of this year’s social media categories, use of YouTube in voting methods, promotion of fan involvement and overall quality program.
