With the fourth pick in Intrepid’s weekly Winner of the Weekend installment, Intrepid has selected the NFL Draft.

Are you ready for some football?  Not only are we months away from the September 5th for the NFL regular season opener between the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants, but we’re in the midst of both the NHL and NBA playoffs. Yet, the excitement for the next NFL season is already building after the completion of the 77th annual NFL Draft this Saturday — reminding us why 6 of the top 10 most valuable sports franchises in the world are NFL teams (3 of the top 10 are the other kind of football and 1 is the Yankees).

As Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal reported on Friday via Twitter, 25.3 million viewers watched the draft’s first round coverage on ESPN and NFL Network.  CNBC’s Sports Biz reporter Darren Rovell pointed out, that the 25.3 million viewers accounts for 8.1% of the United States.  The two networks posted a record combined average rating of 5.28.  Though some credit the high overnight ratings to prime time coverage and lack of competition, a press release issued by ESPN notes an impressive 16% rating increase from last year’s first round, which also enjoyed prime time exposure.  The NFL’s digital media platforms also set a record as unique visitors increased by 53% compared to last year.

The NFL Draft was just another event that kept the NFL tops of the sporting news world during this off-season following the Nike uniform unveiling ceremony on April 3 and the three-hour Schedule Release Show on April 17.  We believe the NFL will  continue to dominate headlines throughout the off season — and for that and many other reasons, they are our Winner of the Weekend.
