Each Monday, Intrepid Marketing Group names a “Winner of the Weekend”. This week, we’ve gone a different direction.
Amidst the festivities surrounding Carter-Finley Stadium and PNC Arena this Saturday, it was clear that we would be naming a “Loser of the Weekend” instead of our weekly Winner. That loser? Cancer. All of the events held this weekend raised funds for organizations that help families affected by cancer.
NC State fans that attended the annual NC State Kay Yow Spring Football Game were asked to donate a minimum of $1 per person to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund (you can read more about the Kay Yow Cancer Fund here). Players and coaches wore pink to raise breast cancer awareness on a field with pink decals. The game alone raised more than $26,000 for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
The game wasn’t the only event on Saturday that raised money to help those affected by cancer. The Holt Foundation’s Inaugural Answers for Cancer 5K Walk was held on Saturday morning as well at PNC Arena and had over 400 participants. The Answers for Cancer Walk benefited the Kids Can! Hospital Program that provides children and families emotional support and information on the many aspects of cancer at Rex Cancer Center, Duke Cancer Center and Alamance Regional Cancer Center in North Carolina, and the Siteman Cancer Center in St. Louis, Missouri. A portion of the walk proceeds also benefited the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Final fundraising figures from the Holt Foundation Walk have not yet been released.
Finally, following the walk and prior to the football game, twenty teams participated in a BBQ cook-off in a Wolfpack Club BBQ Bowl raised an additional $3,300 for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and the Wolfpack Club Kay Yow Endowment. Former NC State players Audie Cole, Terrell Manning and Jonathan Redmond and Dean of the NC State University College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Johnny Wynne served as the celebrity judges. A North Carolina Pork Council Sanctioned event, the BBQ offered the winner the chance to represent the Wolfpack Club in the annual North Carolina BBQ Cook-off held at the NC State Fairgrounds each fall. Tailgaters for the Spring Game were then able to enjoy the competitors BBQ with sides courtesy of Backyard Bistro.
Congratulations are in order for NC State University, the Wolfpack Club and the Holt Foundation for hosting such great events to help fight cancer, this week’s Loser of the Weekend.
