Welcome to our second installment of “Winning the Weekend.”  Last week, Cory Booker made a splash in the media when he saved a neighbor from her burning home.  Booker is a political up and comer who leverages the publicity he earned for the greater good.

When Newark, N.J. mayor Cory Booker entered his neighbor’s burning home and saved a woman trapped on the second story, he rightfully captured a lot of publicity and praise.

Though he claims he would do what anyone else would have done, Mayor Booker is the Intrepid Winner of the Weekend because he was able to leverage his actions, via traditional and social media, into a humble message by thanking concerned citizens, giving praise to officers involved and informing followers on fire safety tips.

Booker has been known to leverage social media in the past – speaking directly with constituents who had complaints:

He also posts pictures from community events (not just fundraisers), inspirational quotes and frequently asks users to Direct Message him for more in-depth help.  Booker has even gone on to launch Newark Jobs Connect as a new platform to help residents find more jobs through the social recruiting site TweetMyJobs.

We would be remiss not to mention the personality and humor he conveys as well.  From acknowledging the #CoryBookerStories nationally trending topic that compares him to the superhero likes of Chuck Norris to retweeting a Texts from Hillary Clinton Tumblr post, he proves what has always been true about social media: it’s a tool to portray your personality, not just push a message.
