This is our first of a Monday installment here where we will name our Winner of the Weekend.  This weekend, it was clearly Bubba Watson.  Our own golf expert Margaret explains why he’s a winner off the course, too.

After an exciting conclusion to the 76th Masters golf championship this Easter Sunday, Gerry “Bubba” Watson Jr. tugged at America’s heartstrings by tearfully hugging his caddy Ted Scott, mother Mollie and a long list of other friends.  Bubba’s unbelievable wedge shot on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff against South African Louis Oosthuizen all but cemented his green jacket– and will be remembered as one of the greatest shots in Masters’ history.  But, what cemented Bubba as Intrepid’s Winner of the Weekend, was the humility and graciousness he showed to his fans via Twitter to his 462,000 plus followers (50,000 of which he gained this past weekend).

Bubba has always been among the fan favorites on the PGA Tour because of his unique playing style, quirky moves, pink Ping driver and an affinity for Southern food and jean overalls.  He has also been known to engage with fans through social media, whether it is through real-time interviews with the PGA and fans, humorous tweets or updating fans on his newly adopted son Caleb with his wife Angie.  What impressed us the most this weekend though, stems from the fact that he has taken the time from his undoubtedly current whirlwind to thank all of the fans showing support across the Twitterverse.  Don’t believe he’s thanking every fan?  Check out his Twitter timeline.

With his first major victory and new son, Bubba seems to be on top of the world.  The timeliness and thoroughness of his tweets are impressive to say the least, so we have to say that Bubba seems top of the Twitter world as well.  His tweets of fan appreciation increase his likability that much more, just when we thought it couldn’t get any higher.  Kudos to Bubba for remaining humble and thanking the fans as he slips on his green jacket and wins the Masters championship this weekend!
